Overcoming Self-Doubt: How to Be Your Own Best Friend

One of the most important assets to have in your arsenal to get through this life is a healthy sense of self-love and esteem. It’s the difference between facing the world head-on and succeeding in life and cowering in a corner and taking whatever life brings your way.

But let’s be real, loving oneself isn’t exactly the easiest task in the world. It’s not like there’s a self-love vending machine that you can just insert your quarters into, and bam! Instant self-love.

No, it’s a journey that requires patience, dedication, and a bit of self-discovery.

Unfortunately, self-doubt is like that pesky little fly that always seems to buzz around when you’re trying to enjoy a nice picnic of self-love.

It’s that nagging voice in the back of your head that says, “You’re not good enough,” “You can’t do it,” “You’re not pretty enough,” or “You’re not smart enough.” But, just like that pesky fly, self-doubt can be swatted away.

To be here, you already know just how bad thoughts of self-doubt can be and how limiting they can be for you.

It can be draining and leave you exhausted and doubting your own abilities. Sometimes, it may even drive you to look for confidence boosters in all the wrong places.

But self-doubt is not just a nuisance; it can be downright harmful. It can hold you back from reaching your full potential and can lead to a negative spiral of self-worth.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone in this battle. The good news is that it can be overcome by replacing it with its rival, self-love.

In this guide, you are going to learn how to embrace yourself for who you are and be the person you want to be.

Self-Doubt and Self-Esteem: Two Sides of a Coin

Self-doubt and self-esteem are two sides of the same coin, often intertwined and affecting each other. With self-doubt, it’s like having a constant inner critic that never seems to shut up.

It’s that voice that tells you that you’re not good enough, smart enough, or capable enough to do something. And when self-doubt takes over, it can make you feel paralyzed, unable to move forward and achieve your goals.

When self-doubt starts to take over, it can quickly erode your self-esteem, making you doubt yourself even more, and leaving you feeling hopeless and helpless. You may start believing you’re not worthy of success, love, or happiness.

On the other hand, when you have high self-esteem, you have confidence in yourself and your abilities. You believe that you’re worthy of good things and are more likely to take risks and pursue your goals.

You’re also more likely to have a positive outlook on life and to be resilient in the face of challenges.

It’s like being in a cycle; the more self-doubt you have, the more it eats away at your self-esteem, and the less self-esteem you have, the more self-doubt creeps in. It’s a vicious chain but one that can be broken.

In the next section, we’ll talk about how you can break this seemingly never-ending cycle.

Common Misconceptions About Self-Doubt

“Self-doubt only affects weak people and is a sign of weakness”: Nothing could be farther from the truth! Self-doubt can affect anyone, regardless of their strength or weakness. It’s a normal part of the human experience. In fact, self-doubt is often a sign that you are doing something outside of your comfort zone, and that, my dear friend, is a sign of strength.

“Self-doubt means you’re not good enough”: if you ever thought that self-doubt was a reflection of your abilities, then you thought wrong. Sure, the feeling makes you doubt your abilities and decisions, but it does not mean that you are not capable or worthy.

“Once you overcome self-doubt, it will never come back”: well, this is a great joke if I ever heard one. The journey of getting over self-doubt is just that, a journey, not a one-time event. What is important is learning how to manage it and shut it down each time it tries to rear its ugly head and get control over you.

“Self-doubt is only a negative thing”: While self-doubt can be uncomfortable, it can also be a positive thing. It can help you to question your assumptions, evaluate your decisions and make better choices.

How to Overcome Self-Doubt and Be Your Own Best Friend

1: Acknowledge the Elephant in the Room

For you to be here, reading this post, you are already one step into the journey of overcoming your self-doubt. So take a moment to celebrate yourself. The first step in overcoming self-doubt is identifying and acknowledging its presence in your life.

It’s important to recognise when and where it arises, whether it’s during a specific task or in a certain social situation. Understanding that self-doubt is a normal part of the human experience can also help you to feel less alone in your struggles.

It’s not always easy to acknowledge self-doubt, especially if you’ve been taught to suppress or ignore it. But ignoring it won’t make it go away. Once you’ve recognised it, you can start to take steps to challenge and overcome it.

Another thing you should never forget in this journey called life is that everyone has phases of self-doubt. Take a deep breath and let that sink in.

Oftentimes, it’s easy to get carried away because everyone looks like they have their life together. Well, I can tell you for free how untrue that is! I, for one, struggle to get my work out in the open because “what if?”

Think of the most powerful or confident person you know. I bet you they have down days too. Why am I telling you this? So that you remember that you’re not alone in your struggles with self-doubt.

2. It’s Mostly in Your Mind: Work on Your Thoughts

“The mind is a powerful thing, and you can either use it for your advantage or let it hold you back.”

After you have acknowledged the areas where self-doubt has the edge over you, the next step is to begin to do the mental work that comes with replacing the negative thoughts with positive ones.

One way to challenge these thoughts is to question their validity. Are they based on facts, or are they just assumptions? Are they helpful, or are they holding you back?

Just as your muscles can be strengthened through exercise, your thoughts and beliefs can be changed too. You’re taking control of your mind by challenging these negative thoughts and beliefs and pushing yourself towards a more positive and productive mindset.

Again, just like it is with exercising, it takes time and effort to see results, but with consistent practice and determination, you’ll be able to push through the negative thoughts and beliefs.

Remember, “The only limit to our realisation of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.”

3. Show a Bit More Compassion to Yourself

It is often said that we are our own hardest critics. That’s why you keep rehashing past mistakes and beating yourself up for them.

I’ve always wondered about that and why it is so. The truth is we go hard on ourselves because we feel and know we can do better, but sometimes, we push too hard and end up doing more harm than good.

It’s easy to be hard on yourself, but self-compassion allows you to view yourself with the kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend.

How would you want a best friend to treat you? With compassion and kindness or with a hard critical approach all the time? If you relly want to let go of self-doubt, then you are going to need to treat yourself with as much kindness as you would like to receive from your friends. The truth is, others will not give it to you if you do not first give it to yourself.

Instead of criticising yourself for perceived failures, try to understand that you’re only human and that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Remember to give yourself credit for your successes, big or small, and acknowledge the effort you put in.

Even if you have not done a lot of good in your life, there is probably that one thing that you are excellent at. And before you go wracking your brain, it does not have to be something mighty.

Find that thing and celebrate yourself in that area. View yourself through the lenses of that success, and you will realise how easily you can overcome self-doubt when you have the memory of that win to cheer you on.

So does this mean you should become self-indulgent and neglect your responsibilities? Absolutely not!  Be gentle with yourself, but don’t overdo it.

4. Celebrate Your Small Wins

A surefire way to up your self-confidence game is by setting and achieving small goals. Yes, again with the goals.

Setting small, achievable goals for yourself and successfully reaching them gives you a sense of accomplishment and helps to build your confidence. It’s important to remember that these goals don’t have to be big or impressive; they just need to be meaningful to you.

And once you’ve achieved them, make sure to celebrate your accomplishments with a reward. As the saying goes, “If no one will clap for you, you should clap for yourself.”

Remember one of the misconceptions? Overcoming self-doubt is not a one-off event. The more small successes you have, the more you will begin to see yourself as a winner and the more you’ll start to believe in yourself.

So, don’t be afraid to set small goals and celebrate your accomplishments; it’s a step towards building self-confidence and overcoming self-doubt.

5. Take Care of Yourself

If there is something that we all so easily overlook, it is our physical and emotional well-being. You’re probably thinking: what does that have to do with self-doubt and overcoming it?

Well, the answer is, a lot! What we eat and how much we rest and manage our stress have a huge bearing on the state of our minds.

First things first, let’s talk about your diet. You know what they say, “You are what you eat.” So, if you want to be strong, confident and self-doubt-free, then you have to fuel your body with healthy, nutrient-rich foods.

And no, it doesn’t mean you can never have that slice of pizza again. It just means that you are more intentional about balancing it out with some greens and fruits, you know, to keep things in check.

Next up, exercise. It’s not just good for your physical health; it’s also great for your mental health. It’s a scientifically proven fact that regular exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety, and who doesn’t want that?

So, whether it’s hitting the gym, going for a run, or just dancing like nobody’s watching, make sure you’re moving your body regularly.

And last but not least, get some shut-eye. Sleep is like the elixir of life, and without it, you’ll be like a zombie.

Make sure you’re getting enough quality sleep each night, and if you’re having trouble sleeping, try some stress-reducing techniques such as meditation or yoga.

Trust me, a well-rested mind is a clear mind, and a clear mind is a self-doubt-free mind.

6. Learn From Your Failures

Once, a young chef was preparing for his final exam. He had been working hard for months, perfecting his techniques and experimenting with new recipes.

But on the day of the exam, disaster struck. His souffle fell, and his sauce curdled. He was devastated and felt like a failure. But his mentor, a seasoned chef, saw things differently. He told the young chef that every failed dish is an opportunity to learn and grow.

The chef took his mentor’s words to heart and embraced his failure as a learning opportunity.

Instead of getting discouraged, he asked his instructor for feedback on what went wrong and began experimenting with new techniques and ingredients to improve his dishes. By viewing his failures as opportunities to learn and grow, he was able to improve his skills and eventually passed the exam with flying colours.

We all experience failure at some point, but it’s important to remember that failure is not something to be feared or avoided; it’s a chance to learn and grow.

The same holds true in our own lives. Instead of getting discouraged, view your failures as opportunities to learn and grow.

Ask yourself: what can I learn from the experience and how can I use that knowledge to improve in the future?

7. Speak Positively to Yourself

How do you speak to yourself when you are all alone? Do you say kind words and hype yourself up or belittle yourself with your words?

You are the only person you will spend your entire life with, and therefore, the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. How much you love yourself will show in the way you talk to yourself.

The way you talk to yourself can have a big impact on your self-confidence, and it’s important to make sure you’re speaking to yourself in a kind and encouraging way. Here are some examples of positive things you can say to yourself:

  • “I am capable and strong.”
  • “I can handle any challenge that comes my way.”
  • “I am proud of my accomplishments.”
  • “I am worthy of love and happiness.”
  • “I trust my decisions and abilities.”

Call them mantras or what you may, but when you speak positively to yourself, you are reminding yourself of your strengths and capabilities.

You are building your self-confidence and creating a positive mindset. Before you know it, it becomes a default setting.

8. You Are One of a Kind: Embrace It

When it comes to embracing your uniqueness, there’s no one else like you and there never will be. You are one-of-a-kind, with your own set of strengths, weaknesses, and unique qualities that make you who you are.

It’s essential to remember that everyone is different, and that’s what makes the world such an interesting and diverse place.

It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and wish we had their talents, qualities, or even their lives.

But the truth is, you are exactly where you are supposed to be and you have everything you need within you to be successful and happy.

Embrace your individuality and let it shine through in everything you do. Conversely, you should not attempt to be like anyone else. When you embrace your spice, you will see that it is your biggest strength.

Bonus Point: Dress for Success

When you look good and dress well, you feel good. Need I say more?

Improved self-esteem: you’ll naturally feel better about yourself. This can lead to improved self-esteem and a greater sense of self-worth.
